The German American Children’s Chorus officially began on October 7, 1935 through the foresight of German immigrants in the Chicago area who wanted to preserve the heritage and appreciation of the German culture and music. 

Twenty years later, to ensure its continued vitality, the German American Jugenchor was formed for older high school and college-aged students. 

Now approaching its 90th anniversary, the German American Children’s Chorus, encompassing both the Kinderchor and Jugenchor, continues to thrive with children aged four through eighteen from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Importantly, knowledge of German is not a prerequisite, as the children are introduced to the language through the fundamental elements of music found in both German and American songs.

Throughout the year, the young performers, the girls in their vibrant dirndls and the boys in traditional lederhosen and trachten vests, come together to present a variety of programs. Major annual events include the cherished Mother’s Day and Christmas concerts, along with Mai Fest, German Fest, and the Tree Lighting in Lincoln Square. Over the years, the Chorus has graced numerous stages across Chicago, including the Daley Center, Orchestra Hall, the Museum of Science and Industry, The Union League Club, and even the Bozo Circus. A special highlight was their invitation to perform at Epcot in Disney World, Orlando, Florida, in 2005.

Expanding their musical horizons, the Chorus embarked on their first concert tour to Germany in 2002. This was followed by five more successful European tours in 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019, and 2023. During these tours, they had the honor of performing alongside esteemed choruses such as the Regensburger Dompatzen Boys Choir, the Bielefelder Kinderchor, and with the singer Cornelius Van Der Hayden.

Today, the chorus is still going strong and is approaching it’s 90th anniversary this year!
