The German American Children’s Chorus officially began on October 7, 1935 through the foresight of German immigrants in the Chicago area who wanted to preserve the heritage and appreciation of the German culture and music.  Twenty years later they expanded and added the German American Jugenchor to keep the chorus alive with music for the older high school and college aged children.  Today, the choir is still going strong and is approaching it’s 90th anniversary this year!

Kinderchor is comprised of children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.  Children ages four through eighteen make up the German American Children’s Chorus comprising of a Kinderchor and a Jugenchor.  Knowledge of German is not a requirement as they are introduced to the language through the basics of melody, rhythm and harmony found in German and American songs.  The girls in their colorful red or black dirndls and the boys in lederhosen and trachten vests, join voices in a wide variety of programs throughout the year.  The Mother’s Day and Christmas concerts along with Mai Fest, German Fest and the Tree Lighting in Lincoln Square are our major events throughout the year.  The Choir has performed throughout the City of Chicago at many venues: Daley Center, Orchestra Hall, The Museum of Science and Industry, The Union League Club and Bozo Circus throughout the years.  In 2005 the Chorus was invited to sing at Epcot in Disney World in Orlando Florida.

In 2002 the Chorus embarked on their first concert tour to Germany and have successfully had five more European tours in 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019 and 2023.  On their European tours they have performed with renowned choruses as the Regensburger Dompatzen Boys Choir, the Bielefelder Kinderchor and singer Cornelius Van Der Hayden.
